What it is and what you do with it: a set of about 34 books from the Little Critter series by Mercer Mayer.

Tap on the cover to download the chosen book (subscribers have access to all the books).

Each book has three reading modes: listen to the narrated story with the words highlighted, read as a 'traditional' book and auto play (automatic reading and turning the pages). Tap on the pictures to hear the associated words read out.

What we liked: the concept (a subscription based access to the full library). Little Critter stories. Original artwork. Sounds and sound backgrounds. Good navigation and reading options (easy access to single pages, words are highlighted when read by the narrator etc.). Professional narration (plus the option to record and share your own narration). Extra activities (e.g. spot the mice). The reporting feature for parents (though we wish there were more options).

What we didn't like: the pages are very static (apart from zoom in/zoom out type animations).

Note about our ratings: please note that our ratings are based on the 'full access' version of the app.

What it is/what you do with it: interactive bedtime storybook with extra features. About 30 pages/scenes.

Extra features include: Moon Man Dan 'Gravity Lever' film/episode plus a nightlight.

Listen to the narration, tap objects and characters for interactions and mini-games (e.g. tap to count Moonmoos, tap on the telescope to learn the names of the parts, build a seesaw to launch the telescope into space etc)

What we liked: the story. Simple illustrations and animations. Lots of engaging interactions complementing the storyline. Humor and fun factor. The video and the 'nightlight' feature.

What we didn't like: the app could be more responsive. No word highlighting or page selector.

What it is: a drawing app with unique animation features.

What you do with it: pick a scene (there are 12 ready-made scenes + blank canvas + an option to choose a picture from the device). Listen to the instructions (the goal is to draw squiggles complementing the picture, e.g. add 'squiggly' wool to the sheep or waves in the see). Press the 'go' button to see a simple animation involving the objects in the scene and the user-made squiggles (e.g. spaghetti swirling on the plate).

The app also includes a short animated movie with the main characters and a mini book with simple interactive elements. What we liked: excellent concept, great graphics, easy operation, spoken and visual instructions. Good and easy to use painting tools. Overall 'look and feel' of the app. The options to save and share the pictures.

What we didn't like: saved pictures are only accessible from the 'parent' menu. No control over the animations in the 'free' modes (when blank canvas and pictures from the camera are used). Links to Facebook and Twitter (they are in the Parental Zone section but are still easily available to a child).

Bottom line: funny, entertaining and simple to use drawing app with some extras. We really liked it!

.What it is: an interactive animated movie (based on the WordWorld series by PBS Kids) about a dog celebrating his birthday with his friends. Includes educational activities (letter recognition, word building).

What you do with it: the movie is divided into 9 sequences. Each sequence ends with a short task (e.g. find letters to create a specific word, match objects with their contours etc). After the task is completed, the next sequence of the movie will be played. Each sequence/activity can also be accessed individually from the menu.

What we liked: the concept of a truly interactive movie/tv series for tablets ('Touchable Television'), superb 3D TV quality animations, funny characters, great narration (includes instructions for the tasks), great voice acting, lots of tiny details, the way the educational activities are integrated in the story.

What we didn't like: the educational content is a bit limited (just a few words, the activities are rather simple when you compare them to 'specialized' apps). Can get repetitive after the story is played one or two times. We didn't like the 'draw the square' feature too much.

Bottom line: we really liked it... and the kids will like it, too!

What it is: an app for learning colors, shapes and numbers.

What you do with it: there are 10 activities in this app: drawing shapes with a finger, stacking up the shapes (with elements of gravity applied), drawing lines and making objects interact with the lines, recognizing and mixing colors, playing with opposite colors, counting and counting in groups.

What we liked: the concept, the app is very well put together, it is extremely easy to navigate and to play with. The activities are simple but very engaging. The app has spoken instructions, there is a short demo before each activity explaining the interactions.

What we didn't like: some minor details (like the shapes in the Bouncing Numbers activity which move too fast). We would love to see more shapes (there are just 3 in the app) plus some kind of tips or instructions for parents would be welcome.
