What it is/what you do with it: tablet/smartphone access to games and activities available in the ABCmouse.com learning program.

Over 5000 activities (reading, math, music, art, early science), including lessons puzzles, games, books, songs, printables and more.

What we liked: the concept. Excellent set of quality kid-friendly activities and games with narration and and spoken instructions. Excellent set of features, including stats & progress report and a simple rewards system. Excellent educational value.

What we didn't like: some features could be more responsive.

What it is: an interactive book (about 25 pages long) with extra activities (mini-games, puzzles etc).

What you do with it: read the book or listen to the narration. Tap characters/objects for interactions. Complete the story by playing mini-games and solving simple puzzles (e.g. cross a river full of crocodiles, repeat sound sequences etc).

What we liked: the story. Beautiful, vibrant illustrations and animations. Interactions and puzzles complementing the storyline. Humor and fun factor. Narration, voice acting, sounds and sound backgrounds. Lot's of tiny fun details. 3 difficulty levels (suitable for various age groups). The challenge to get the surprise activity. Overall quality of the app.

What we didn't like: the reading features could be better (e.g. no words highlighting).

What it is and what you do with it: iPad/iPhone versions of the Highlights' All About books series.

Each book contains a set of themed interactive stories, videos, puzzles and creative activities (e.g. Spring, Winter, Transportation).

What we liked: the concept. Great range of content in each book. Excellent set of activities. High quality visuals. Narration and spoken instructions. Ease of use. Great educational value.

What we didn't like: none.

Note about in-app purchases: the library comes with one free book (All About Fall). Additional books (there are 10 books in total) are available as in-app purchases.

What we liked: the concept (a subscription based access to the full library). Dr Seuss stories. Original artwork. Sounds and sound backgrounds. Good navigation and reading options (easy access to single pages, words are highlighted when read by the narrator etc.). Professional narration (plus the option to record and share your own narration). The progress reporting feature (though we wish there were more options).

What we didn't like: the pages are very static (apart from zoom in/zoom out type animations).
