Best apps for kids for music education.
Best music apps for kids for iPad and iPhone ranked by Appysmarts editors and users.
iPad and iPhone apps are very helpful in music education of toddlers and preschool kids. For example children can learn how to play piano and other musical instruments using iPad. This device allows kids to learn to sing popular songs and experiment with sounds through a free play.
There are tons of apps teaching single notes, harmonies, famous melodies and songs.
Creative interactive play with music and sounds on the iPad is a great way to introduce your kids to the world of music.
Best for: Music & rhythm, Eye-hand coordination, Music & art
What it is/what you do with it: a music app featuring characters from Sesame Street.
2 play modes: play an instrument along with a song or free play.
6 popular songs (e.g. Old McDonald, Row, Row, Row Your Boat) and 6 instruments.
What we liked: the concept. Good choice of children's songs in a variety of renditions (rock, hip-hop, jazz etc.). Features original Sesame Street characters. Humor and fun factor. Ease of use. Narration and spoken instructions. No ads or other distracting features.
What we didn't like: works better on newer (faster) devices. Only linear navigation in the Band Mode.
Best for: Interactive play, Creativity, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Music & art
What it is and what you do with it: interactive play app combining visuals and music.
Create 'ice cream' by mixing various patterns and adding extras (toppings, stickers) then feed it a funny monster .
Dragging or tapping items on the screen (e.g. scoops of ice cream) will change background music arrangement.
What we liked: the concept. Great for creative exploration (visuals and music). Humor and fun factor. Ease of use. Great selection of sound backgrounds and sounds. No distracting features.
What we didn't like: there is no way to record and replay your 'composition'. We missed some sort of tutorial/spoken instructions.
What it is: an app helping children to learn to play guitar. Contains 17 play along songs with instructions how to play and lyrics.
What you do with it: choose the song, follow the instructions and try to 'jam' along the music.
What we liked: the concept, ease of use, simple instructions (no need to know the music notation), high quality recordings of the songs, number of songs and variety of styles, simple, non-distracting illustrations.
What we didn't like: we would expect the instructions to be more interactive and more visual (instead of text descriptions like 'the first note is open 6th string why not show a picture or even an animation?). Some interface issues (it takes time to load a song, accidental tapping causes zooming, works poorly in the landscape mode).
Best for: Music & rhythm, Creativity, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Music & art
What it is: 7 activities for creative play with music and sounds.
What you do with it: follow the instructions and complete the activity (e.g. help Flower Belle water and pick the flowers, fill up Rainbow Belle's paint pots with rainbow colors and color her mushrooms etc).
Tap other objects in the scene (e.g. flowers) for sounds and animations.
What we liked: the concept. The number of interactive elements. Nice illustrations. Fun to use (but please see the note below). No distracting elements. Overall quality of the app. Good for introducing a child to free play and experimenting with sounds and music.
What we didn't like: some of the activities are more engaging than others. No spoken instructions (that's why we recommend Parental Assistance).
Best for: Teacher & parent tools, Eye-hand coordination, Music & art, Personal & social
What it is: a 'nighttime' music timer with extra features.
What you do with it: configure the options (time limit, music, visuals) and start the timer. Depending on the configuration it will play the sounds/songs included in the app or play the music from the Music Library on the device, while displaying the visuals and gradually dimming the screen, helping the child to calm down and fall asleep. Additional 'count the flying cows' activity (touch the cow to make it jump over the moon).
What we liked: the concept of combining visuals and music/sounds with the timer function. Enhances the built-in timer in the device. Lot's of useful configuration options (e.g. an option to configure the timer separately for visuals and dimming of the screen and music). The portrait mode useful when the device is used in a docking station.
What we didn't like: just 3 animals, the 'counting cows' activity is very simple (why no 'autoplay' function?) and the cow moves too fast. Configuring the options could be more user-friendly (or even kid-friendly for older kids, who could be able to do it on their own). The remaining time is not displayed when the timer is activated (even as an option for parents). Does not support playlists or albums (plays just one song from the Library).
Best for: Teacher & parent tools, Interaction, Music & art
What it is:a music player designed for younger kids.
What you do with it: select music genres or iTunes playlist, scan the music library on the device. The app will replace original artwork, track numbers or track titles with easy to remember pictures of animals ('only pictures' mode for 2+ year olds, 'pictures and numbers' for 3+, 'only numbers' for 4+). Tap the animal to play the track.
What we liked: easy, intuitive operation.
What we didn't like: the pictures representing tracks are picked randomly (there is now way to assign the pictures manually). No option to exclude particular tracks or albums (only genres or playlists). No pause function during playback.

What is it/what do you do with it: create music tracks by 'sketching' them using visual interface. Over 40 instruments in 5 categories.
What we liked: the concept. Excellent visual interface. Number of free instruments/samples and patterns (grooves). Ease of use (including a short tutorial). Overall quality of the app.
What we didn't like: no option to export or share created songs.
