What it is: classic Christmas carol with additional features.

What you do with it: two modes:

singalong - sing along with the music; record audio/video while singing along and share it via email or Facebook (see a sample recording here.

playalong - play the song, when the music stops point to the correct number to keep the music playing (reinforces number and counting skills)

What we liked: the concept, beautiful artwork, simple music arrangement, simple operation, the Playalong feature with counting/numbers practice.

What we didn't like: no interactions (apart from the Playalong feature). The words are not highlighted in the Singalong mode. Somehow limited sharing options (e.g. we wish there was an option to view other people's recordings in the app).

Overall Score: 83/100

version reviewed: 1.0.1

reviewed:

Best for: Music & rhythm, Attention & concentration, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Music & art
Video

What it is: 5 scenes/songs with interactive features.

What you do with it: each song/scene contains additional activities: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star - complete 'star' puzzles and learn names of star constellations;Mary Had A Little Lamb - find hidden animals; Working on the Railroad - playing with different items at the rail yard (including assembling a simple train); Over in the Meadow - interact with animals and plants (music and counting); Jack and Jill - make a sailboat race or play a variant of 'whac a mole' game.

Apart from the main activities each scene contains a number of simple interactions/animations.

What we liked: the concept (combine music with interactive activities), ease of use, number of interactive elements in each scene, kid-friendly musical arrangements.

What we didn't like: the difficulty range of the activities is too broad (simple 'find an animal' activity vs. names of star constellations). Lack of consistency in the activities (some scenes, like the 'meadow' scene can get a bit chaotic). The educational value could be better.

Kasey's Guitar Jams for Kids

Kasey's Guitar Jams for Kids

Price: 1.99$

May contain `more apps` links
iPhone + iPad

Overall Score: 83/100

version reviewed: 1.01

reviewed:

Best for: Music & rhythm, Music & art

What it is: an app helping children to learn to play guitar. Contains 17 play along songs with instructions how to play and lyrics.

What you do with it: choose the song, follow the instructions and try to 'jam' along the music.

What we liked: the concept, ease of use, simple instructions (no need to know the music notation), high quality recordings of the songs, number of songs and variety of styles, simple, non-distracting illustrations.

What we didn't like: we would expect the instructions to be more interactive and more visual (instead of text descriptions like 'the first note is open 6th string why not show a picture or even an animation?). Some interface issues (it takes time to load a song, accidental tapping causes zooming, works poorly in the landscape mode).
