Best apps for kids about pirates.
Many kids love stories about pirates & treasures so we decided to create this list of the best educational and fun pirates-themed apps for kids to help you find top apps with pirates for iPhone & iPad in one place. You will find here different types of apps: interactive coloring pages, applications for early math practice or fun puzzles.
Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Music & art, Thinking & problem solving
What it is: two sets of pirate puzzles (9 puzzles in each set, each puzzle from 6 to 20 pieces each) and two pirate songs with animations and interactive elements.
What you do with it: complete each puzzle to view a short animation. Complete all puzzles in a set to unlock a song and play with interactive animated elements during the song.
What we liked: the concept, excellent graphics and animations, songs and sound effects, many interactive elements, high fun and entertainment factor, easy operation. Very informative help/instructions section.
What we didn't like: some characters can be a bit scary for smaller kids (that's why we recommend the app for ages 4+). We found some of the interactions of rather questionable 'fun value' (like the eyeball popping out of one pirate's head or catapulting the spider in one of the songs). Some of the interactive elements are difficult to find.
Bottom line: definitely one of the best apps for all pirate fans.
Best for: Interactive books, Attention & concentration, Early literacy, Interaction, Language, Thinking & problem solving
What it is: an interactive book (about 25 pages long) with extra activities (mini-games, puzzles etc).
What you do with it: read the book or listen to the narration. Tap characters/objects for interactions. Complete the story by playing mini-games and solving simple puzzles (e.g. cross a river full of crocodiles, repeat sound sequences etc).
What we liked: the story. Beautiful, vibrant illustrations and animations. Interactions and puzzles complementing the storyline. Humor and fun factor. Narration, voice acting, sounds and sound backgrounds. Lot's of tiny fun details. 3 difficulty levels (suitable for various age groups). The challenge to get the surprise activity. Overall quality of the app.
What we didn't like: the reading features could be better (e.g. no words highlighting).

What it is: 2 sets of puzzles with cartoon characters: shapes (6 scenes, about 10 pictures/characters each, 6, 12 o 12+ pieces each) and 'classic' (6 scenes, 6, 12 or 20 pieces each scene).
What you do with it: slide the pieces into place to complete the picture or character (in the shapes mode) or the scene (in the classic mode).
What we liked: bright colorful illustrations, number of puzzles, varied difficulty levels, no distracting elements.
What we didn't like: the puzzles are a bit static. The completed puzzles are not marked as 'done'. A bit annoying background music. The app could be a bit 'snappier'.

What it is/what you do with it: an interactive version of the book by Melinda Long. About 17 pages. Two ways of reading the book: listen to the narration and follow the text or read the story yourself (or have the story read to you by a parent). Touch the objects on pages and their name will be displayed and read out. Touch highlighted words or labels on the pictures for extra facts.
What we liked: the concept/story. Good educational value. Excellent reading options (word highlighting, you can touch a word to have it read out, double tap to repeat a paragraph, picture-word associations, interactive glossary). Professional narration. Sounds and sound backgrounds.
What we didn't like: we wish there were more interactive features.

What it is and what you do with it: an interactive 'pop-up' book, about 36 pages long. 3 reading modes (Read to Me, Read it Myself, Autoplay). Complete 9 mini-games to win pirate badges (e.g. copy pirate dance moves, find pieces of hidden treasure etc).
What we liked: the concept. Activities/games complementing the storyline. Quality 3-D like illustrations and animations. Spoken instructions. Humor and fun factor. Easy operation. Professional narration and voice acting. Sounds and sound effects. Reward system with badges. 4 language versions. Overall quality of the app.
What we didn't like: the reading options could be better (the text is not highlighted when read by the narrator).
Best for: Education, Attention & concentration, Early math, Eye-hand coordination
What it is: 3 mini-games for times tables practice (numbers from 1 to 9).
What you do with it: complete the adventures of Captain Mathews by solving various multiplication problems. Collect coins and treasure along the way.
What we liked: the concept (learning math in a game-like environment). Good variety of educational activities as an integral part of the game. Good 'game experience' (the storyline, bonuses, rewards etc). Multiple user accounts with detailed progress tracking. Illustrations and animations. Sounds and sound backgrounds. Overall 'look and feel' of the app.
What we didn't like: no narration, no spoken instructions (that's why we recommend parental assistance). Some elements of the games could be a bit more polished (e.g. the bonus levels take a long time to complete, the Secret Temple level was challenging even for our adult reviewer).
Best for: Interactive books, Attention & concentration, Early literacy, Interaction, Language, Thinking & problem solving
