Appysmarts.com Best Apps for Young Brains

Best apps for kids: Virtual stickers.

There are many apps for children for creative interactive fun with stickers. Kids love creating virtual scenes with ready-to-use elements, such as animals, plants, different characters and buildings. Playing with stickers, sliding them in place and arranging the scene they practice their eye-hand coordination along with the decorating skills and imagination. Some of these apps include interactive features (sounds, simple animations or even names of the object read aloud). Usually you can modify given objects (resize, rotate, flip or move). Apps with stickers are very easy to use so they are suitable even for the youngest kids. Designing scenes with stickers is one of simple ways of introducing little kids to the world of creativity and encourage them to create their own piece of art.

Here are the best for kids for making virtual sticker scenes, picked by Appysmarts team and users:

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Creativity, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Language, Understanding of the world

What it is: an app for creating sticker scenes with the farmyard theme. What you do with it: choose the background, drag the stickers from the menu, flip or move them to create your scene. There are over 50 stickers, 5 animated backgrounds and 6 animated foregrounds to choose from. Created scenes can be saved and shared.

What we liked: the concept, simple but very nice illustrations, good selection of stickers, lots of tiny fun details (many stickers are animated), good educational value (when you grab a sticker the name of the animal/object will be read out: 'spotty pig', 'white sheep'), sounds and sound backgrounds, ease of use.

What we didn't like: no instructions (it took us some time to figure out how to remove a sticker from our scene). We would like to see an option to resize the stickers manually (now they are resized automatically when you move them 'further' or 'closer' in the scene). Prominent links to Twitter and Facebook (on the starting screen and in the 'share' menu).

Bottom line: great app for younger kids to play and learn, we realy liked it!

Best for: Crafts, Attention & concentration, Creativity, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Music & art, Understanding of the world

What it is: An app for creating pictures with drawing tools, shapes and stickers.

What you do with it: please see our video review.

What we liked: this app is very well put together, has lots of tools with many options. Great for more advanced 'artists'. Excellent 'tutorial' videos'. Options to import, save and share.

What we didn't like: usage of the tools menu requires some practice, no zoom function, there are some limitations (for example you can't change a shape after you placed it in the pic).

What it is: a sticker app with over 100 stickers.

What you do with it: choose a house and fill it with furniture, accessories, people and pets.

Created scene can be saved in the photo gallery on the device.

What we liked: the concept. Ease of use. Number and variety of scenes (houses) and stickers to play with.

What we didn't like: limited editing options (only flipping and deleting but no resizing, grouping etc). The scenes are very static. Some of the objects are very small.

Free preview: if you are not sure, please see our 'See before you buy' video or try the free version of Little House Decorator.

Sam's Superheroes

Sam's Superheroes

Price: free

iPad

Overall Score: 79/100

version reviewed: 1.0

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive books, Attention & concentration, Early literacy, Interaction, Language

What it is: Fantasy, Manga-style interactive book with a set of virtual stickers.

What you do with it: listen to the narration or read the book yourself. Touch the characters and objects for interaction. Create, save and share your own sticker scenes with animated objects/stickers taken from the main story (about a hundred objects include backgrounds, 'heroes' and 'villains' character sets, the extras) .

What we liked: interactive elements complementing the story, good narration, the sticker activity (number of stickers, simple editing options, stickers are animated - you can even 'play' the scene after it is finished), visual instructions.

What we didn't like: the story may not appeal to all children (we recommend you try the free version first). Navigation is not consistent. Limited reading/following text options (no simple option to repeat a page, words are not highlighted when read out)

Bottom line: an interesting proposition for the 'superheroes vs. villains' action comic-style books.

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Creativity, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Understanding of the world

What it is: 7 sets of themed virtual stickers. What you do with it: drag the stickers from the menu, flip, resize or rotate them to create a scene. Some of the stickers can be animated (e.g. airplanes). The sets include: superheroes, animals, dinosaurs, airport, sea, dollhouse and snow.

What we liked: the concept, nice selection of stickers for each scene, simple graphics, relatively easy operation.

What we didn't like: the implementation of some of the features (navigation, the additional menu for editing a sticker), imprecise operation (dragging items from the menu requires some effort). No option to group items (would be useful, especially the 'dress the doll' scene). Few animated stickers, limited animation options. We didn't like the 'more apps' button (looks like a link to another set of stickers within the app).

What it is: an app for creating virtual sticker scenes, based on the Eric Carle's book. 5 backgrounds, over 50 stickers.

What you do with it: choose the background, then drag the stickers from the menu to create the scene. The stickers can be then repositioned, resized, rotated or deleted.

What we liked: original artwork. Good choice of backgrounds and large number of stickers to work with. The app is extremely easy to use. Overall quality of the app.

What we didn't like: the sounds (we would expect some real animal sounds instead of the 'beeps' used). The educational value could be higher (no spoken instructions, no names of animals/objects spoken out etc). Created scenes are not saved. Link to the mail app in the main menu (saving the picture to the library would be a better choice).
