The app also contains 4 jigsaw puzzles (5x5 pieces) and 4 coloring sheets.

What it is: an interactive book for younger kids (about 10 pages long).

What you do with it: listen to the narrator (or to the parent reading the book). Touch elements on pages for simple animations and sounds.

As an additional feature you can take a picture of the child and place it in the rocket's cockpit.

What we liked: simple story, nice illustrations, warm, kid-friendly narration, sound effects, no distracting elements.

What we didn't like: the story is very short. We wish there were more animations and interactions (and some visual clues showing which objects are interactive). Some sounds could be a bit quieter.

version reviewed: 1.0

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive play, Creativity, Interaction, Understanding of the world

What it is: an app for creating and launching a virtual space rocket.

What you do with it: the app contains:

- simple 'create and fly your rocket' activity: put the rocket together from the pieces provided, launch it using your voice (the louder you scream during the countdown the further you will fly); after you land (on a random planet or star) you can learn some facts about the planets and the Solar System

- instructions for building your own cardboard rocket

- a virtual launching pad (you can launch the 'real' cardboard rocket you build from there) with extra sound and smoke effects

What we liked: the concept, the illustrations, ease of use, fun factor, sound effects, the option to insert your own photo as the 'astronaut'.

What we didn't like: limited educational value: the scientific 'facts' about the planets are a bit random, they are not too kid-friendly, there is no narration etc). Prominent link to the Game Center.

Overall Score: 91/100

version reviewed: 1.1.1

reviewed:

Best for: Education, Interaction, Understanding of the world

What it is: an interactive book about the Solar System by Marcus Chown. About 150 pages, 40 interactive models of astronomical objects, interactive orrery (plus other interactive features), over 600 images, key facts, details + live data from Wolfram Alpha.

What you do with it: explore the book (please note that there is no narration), view photos, use the interactive features (please refer to our video walkthrough for more details).

What we liked: the concept, range of topics, high quality content, easy navigation. Very good educational value. Great quality illustrations and photos. Good interactive features. Overall quality of the app.

What we didn't like: no narration (for non-reading kids parental assistance is necessary). We wish there were more interactive features.

Bottom line: we really liked this app but it is aimed at an audience slightly older than our usual Appysmarts age range. If you are not sure if the app will suit your child please view our 'See before you buy' video (below).

What it is and what you do with it:a simple arcade game for vocabulary/spelling practice. 8 themes: animals, shapes, transport, body, numbers, food, letters, colors).

Tilt the iPad to steer the spaceman around the maze to match the words with pictures in the correct order. Avoid floating aliens and keep your oxygen level up.

What we liked: the concept. Simple illustrations. Sounds and sound backgrounds. Easy game controls. Spoken instructions, clues/help feature. Fun factor. Good educational value. No distracting elements.

What we didn't like:only timed play (we would like to see some optional 'free play' mode). May get a bit repetitive after longer play (we wish there were more game-like features). May be too challenging for kids with poor eye-hand coordination.

What it is: an interactive book (40+ pages) introducing kids to Space and Space Exploration.

What you do with it: navigate through the topics, read (or listen to the narration). Some pages contain extra photos, videos or diagrams illustrating the topics. The topics include: stars, galaxies, black holes, the Solar System, phases of the Mooon, Mars rovers and space probes, the International Space Station etc.

What we liked: the concept, good educational value (the information is very well presented), broad range of topics covered great layout and graphics, professional narration, no distracting elements.

What we didn't like: almost no interactive features (just a couple of 'interactive diagrams' and a simple memory game). The navigation is not very intuitive. No narration on some of the pages .

Wee Rockets

Wee Rockets

Price: 2.99$

iPhone

Overall Score: 88/100

version reviewed: 1.2

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction

What it is:a simple app for 'assembling' and 'launching' rockets.

What you do with it: select parts of a rocket (body, booster, tip, window) and slide them in place. Launch the rocket and try to 'rescue' aliens while avoiding asteroids.

What we liked: fun factor, simple graphics and animations, easy operation. Good for eye-hand coordination.

What we didn't like: not much variety (may quickly get boring). The rocket parts are presented randomly. Audio instructions or some sort of voice feedback would make this app more suitable for younger kids. Limited educational value.

Cozmo's Day Off - Storybook

Cozmo's Day Off - Storybook

Price: 0.99$

May contain `more apps` links
iPhone + iPad

Overall Score: 88/100

version reviewed: 1.2.1

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive books, Attention & concentration, Early literacy, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Memory, Music & art, Thinking & problem solving

What it is: an interactive book (10 pages long) with a Science Fiction twist.

What you do with it:listen to the story (or read it yourself) and interact with the objects on every page (some of them are just 'for fun' like shooting with the laser beam, some more purposeful, like a jigsaw puzzle or a musical memory game). .

What we liked: the concept, excellent 3D illustrations, extra interactive elements (over 100 items), easy operation and navigation (e.g. you can easily access every individual page), excellent reading/narration/configuration options (the best we've seen so far): the text is highlighted, there are quick buttons for repeating a paragraph, hiding the text box or recording your own narration, the pitch of the narration can be changed, narration/music volume can be adjusted separately. Very informative help/instructions section.

What we didn't like: we would love to see fewer 'fun' and more 'educational' interactive elements or puzzles. The story about a green guy who goes to work is nice but some kids it may not find it too appealing (or understandable).

General notes about our book reviews: although when reviewing books, we try not to review the story itself, the general impressions will be reflected in the Overall Score.

The Age Range assigned to books will be usually broader compared to other apps, as they can be useful for both younger (with parent/narrator reading) or older (reading on their own) kids.
