Appysmarts.com Best Apps for Young Brains

Best apps for kids for learning geography.

The best and most educational apps for preschoolers, children in kindergarten and 1 - 2 graders for teaching geography. Kids can easily learn about the world using interactive maps, books and quizzes. iPad (or even iPhone) can be a very useful tool for classroom education or homeschooling. There are plenty of great apps to encourage kids to learn about the globe, different continents, countries, flags, capitals and cities or seas, rivers and mountains. They can enhance children's curiosity for travelling (from short trips to the longest journeys) and help them learn the geography in a very efficient way.

What it is/what you do with it: an interactive book/virtual trip introducing kids to landmarks of the Amazon/rainforest. 20 pages/scenes, 2 language versions.

Go through the scenes (either all scenes in a sequence or by picking the scenes/places from the map), listen to the description/instructions and complete the activities (e.g. shoot with a bow, catch fish etc).

What we liked: the concept. Good variety of activities complementing the storyline. Many extra features (souvenirs, stickers, postcards). Ease of use. Spoken instructions. Sounds and sound backgrounds.

What we didn't like: the app could have more educational value (e.g. there is no facts or 'real-life' explanations etc). The reading options could be more 'young reader friendly'.

What it is: a drawing course with video lessons (about 10 minutes each).

What you do with it: choose and watch the video tutorials then use the visual guide to practice on your own. The lessons are divided into chapters (Northwest states, Southwest states etc). The lessons are presented by painter and illustrator Ken O'Brien.

What we liked: the concept, good educational value, easy to use interface for navigating around the videos. The lessons are logically divided into chapters, they are professionally presented and easy to follow. The quality of the videos is very good. We also liked the tips, visual guides and step by step text instructions allowing you to practice at your own pace.

What we didn't like: the material could be presented in more kid-friendly way (in regard to the language, lesson structure and pace of the videos). The app requires internet connection (alternatively you can download the videos for viewing offline). Good reading skills or parental assistance are necessary if you want to use the text guides. In-app purchases: the app contains links to other (paid) drawing courses.

What it is: a simple game teaching basic world geography, divided into 15 missions over 6 continents: 75 countries (capitals, flags, landmarks, neighbors etc). Two modes: learn (review the information about the countries) and the challenge mode (answer the questions).

What you do with it: complete each mission by answering a set of questions about a group of neighboring countries (3-6 countries for each mission, depending on the area of the world): recognize capitals, flags, border contours, landmarks, neighbors etc.

What we liked: the concept. Game-like features (storyline/plot, narration, engagement). Comic style illustrations and animations. Sounds and sound backgrounds. Ease of use. No distracting elements.

What we didn't like: we wish the learning mode would be more engaging and present more content (e.g. pictures of landmarks). The gameplay gets repetitive after some time (you just choose the correct answer from 2 answers presented). The time limit may be too challenging for some kids.

What it is: a set of 4 activities for enhancing geographic knowledge.

What you do with it: map learn (tap a state on the map to learn about this state), map quiz (read the instructions and point to the correct state (e.g. 'click the state with the capital 'Saint Paul'), drive quiz (read the instructions and 'drive' the car through the states in question, e.g. 'drive through the state with the capital Sacramento, through the state Texas, through the state with the capital Atlanta'), text quiz (read the instructions and point to the correct answer, e.g. 'Idaho has the following capital:').

What we liked: good variety of activities, simple operation, the reward system with 'state coins', customizable learning options (let you choose particular datasets to learn: capitals, landmarks, major cities etc).

What we didn't like: some of the activities could offer more inspiration and feedback (e.g. the text quiz, the drive quiz). No audio instructions (parental assistance will be required for kids who are not accomplished readers). We didn't like the narration (the voice reading out state names) and the 'retro' design'.
