Price: 1.99$

Android

Overall Score: 99/100

version reviewed: 1.0

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Memory

What is it/what do you do with it: 3 activities based on the popular TV series: Pop Pop Peachers (simple arcade game), Mim-mim Memory (memory/matching pairs game) and a set of coloring pages.

What we liked: the concept. Art and characters from the TV series. Humor and fun factor. Good selection of tools in the coloring activity. Sound backgrounds and sounds. Good for Kate and Mim-Mim fans.

What we didn't like: the Pop Pop game is very basic and can quickly get repetitive. No narration or spoken instructions. A bit limited educational value.

Video

What it is: a set of 14 interactive scenes based on the book by Dorothy Kunhardt.

What you do with it: the 'activities' mode: choose a scene and follow the audio instructions to complete a simple task by tapping or swiping on the screen (e.g. pop bubbles in the bath, make 'music' in the kitchen, find the bunny in the room, play peek-a-boo). In the paint mode: rub the screen to reveal the colors in the pictures.

What we liked: the concept, great illustrations, extremely easy navigation and operation, number and variety of activities, audio instructions, background music and sound effects.

What we didn't like: the egg hunting activity as it may be confusing for smaller children who accidentally tap on the egg (could be available as an option instead).

Bottom line: one of the best apps aimed at the youngest kids we have reviewed so far.

Android

Overall Score: 87/100

version reviewed: 1.37

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive books, Attention & concentration, Early literacy, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Personal & social

What it is: an interactive version of the book by Mercer Mayer (about 20 pages long).

What you do with it:three ways of 'reading' this book: listen to the narrated story with the words highlighted, read as a 'traditional' book and auto play (automatic reading and turning the pages). Tap on the pictures to hear the associated words read out.

Additional activity: find 17 mice and 100 Easter Eggs hidden in the pages.

What we liked: the story. Original artwork. Professional narration, sounds and sound backgrounds. Excellent reading options (easy access to single pages, words are highlighted when read by the narrator, picture-word associations etc.). The Easter Egg Hunt activity. The option to record and share your own narration.

What we didn't like: no animations, the pages are very static (apart from zoom in/zoom out type animations). We wish there was some sort of mice and egg counter.

KidCalc 7-in-1 Math Fun (Including New Birthday Party and Halloween Themes)

KidCalc 7-in-1 Math Fun (Including New Birthday Party and Halloween Themes)

Price: free

May contain `more apps` links
iPhone

Overall Score: 65/100

version reviewed: 1.19.2

reviewed:

Best for: Education, Attention & concentration, Early math, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Thinking & problem solving, Understanding of the world

What it is: a set of 7 activities for improving math skills.

What you do with it: count objects, compare numbers and quantities, solve addition/substraction/multiplication/division tasks. Play with a kid-friendly calculator. Trace numbers with your finger.

What we liked: the concept, high configurability (for example you can adjust the difficulty of the activities to your child's age), voice prompts. Educational value (approach to math problems), especially when used with parent's supervision.

What we didn't like: may not be too appealing visually, some of the activities are repetitive. There is not much 'fun factor'. Audio could be better (clearer pronunciation). Better used as a tool for teacher/parent than a standalone 'game' for your child.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit Special Easter Edition

The Tale of Peter Rabbit Special Easter Edition

iPhone + iPad

Overall Score: 58/100

version reviewed: 3.2

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive books, Attention & concentration, Creativity, Early literacy, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Language, Music & art, Personal & social, Thinking & problem solving, Understanding of the world

What it is: a book with additional puzzles and coloring options.

What you do with it: please see our video presentation.

What we liked: concept of the 'hidden puzzles' (but they may be too difficult for some kids), original illustrations

What we didn't like: text too small, no highliting of text, no option to repeat words or page, very little interaction, we didn't understand the idea behind changing from contour to color, the 'coloring' option is almost unusable.

What we liked: the concept. Excellent set of coloring tools. Fun factor. Ease of use. Special 'easy' setting or younger kids. No distracting elements.
