What it is: a set of animated alphabet flashcards.

What you do with it: tap a letter to see how it is formed and hear its name and sound. Tap again for simple animations and sounds illustrating the letter e.g. pizza, penguin and pen for 'p', horse, hand, hammer for 'h' etc (3 examples for each letter).

What we liked: both letter names and letter sounds included, multiple examples for each letter, nice clear illustrations, subtle sound backgrounds, ease of use, no distracting elements.

What we didn't like: a bit limited interactivity (just 'touch and watch') - may not offer enough incentive to go through all the letters. Some of the animations are very simple.

Overall Score: 90/100

version reviewed: 2.1

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive books, Attention & concentration, Early literacy, Eye-hand coordination, Language

What it is: an interactive adaptation of Dr Seuss's classic.

What you do with it: three ways of 'reading' this book: listen to the narrated story with the words highlighted, read as a 'traditional' book and auto play (automatic reading and turning the pages). Tap on the pictures to hear the associated words read out.

What we liked: the story. Original artwork. Professional audio narration. Sounds and sound backgrounds. Excellent reading options (words are highlighted when read by the narrator, you can tap on a single word to hear it read aloud or long press to listen to a paragraph, picture/word associations). Great educational value. The option to record your own narration.

What we didn't like: the ads for other apps have to be manually turned off (they are 'on' by default). We wish there were more interactions and animations.

Android

Overall Score: 89/100

version reviewed: 1.0.1

reviewed:

Best for: Education, Attention & concentration, Early literacy, Interaction, Language, Memory, Thinking & problem solving

What it is: an app for learning the letters of the alphabet and letter sounds.

What you do with it: choose a letter then try to find the way through the maze (from which the letter is composed) and collect the items (whose names start with the letter).

What we liked: the concept, both letter names and letter sounds included, easy operation, simple graphics, no distracting elements, audio instructions, multiple user accounts.

What we didn't like: not much variety (you get the same objects in the maze for each run for a particular letter). Some parents/educators may not like of the idea of dragging the ball with a finger (as it doesn't teach 'proper' tracing) - maybe tilting the device to steer the ball would be a better alternative.
