Toddler Sound 123

Toddler Sound 123

Price: 2.99$

iPhone + iPad

Overall Score: 92/100

version reviewed: 2.0

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive play, Language, Understanding of the world

What is it and what do you do with it: a set of about 360 sound flashcards. Tap the icon representing an object or a group of objects a random image will be displayed and the name of the object will be read out.

6 categories: domestic animals, wild animals, musical instruments, vehicles, household objects and scenery.

What we liked: the concept. Good selection of quality photographs. Many cards feature extra sounds (animals, vehicles). No distracting elements. Ease of use.

What we didn't like: only random mode of play (many icons actually represent not a single object but a group of similar objects and tapping the same icon multiple times gives you a different object every time you tap). The narrator's voice could be more inspiring.

Free preview: if you are not sure, please see our 'See before you buy' video (below) or try the free version of the Toddler Sound 123 - Flashcards for baby to touch and play app.

Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue

Overall Score: 91/100

version reviewed: 2.1

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive books, Attention & concentration, Creativity, Early literacy, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Language, Music & art, Personal & social, Thinking & problem solving, Understanding of the world

What it is: an interactive adaptation of the 'Thomas & Friends' book with extra activities.

What you do with it:listen to the story, touch the pics for some interaction. Plus: a painting activity, connect the dots and jigsaw puzzles.

What we liked: the concept, good quality of graphics and narration, easy operation. Extra activities. Good app for fans of Thomas & Friends.

What we didn't like: the story has only one mode 'read to me'. Too few interactive elements. The painting activity is almost useless. We had problem with finding the recommended age bracket for this app: the puzzles are very easy on the other hand the video is rather suitable for kids, who can read quite well. The price is too high for what this app offers.

Makego

Makego

Price: free (was 0.99$)

iPhone + iPad

Overall Score: 90/100

version reviewed: 1.01

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive toys, Attention & concentration, Creativity, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Personal & social, Thinking & problem solving, Understanding of the world

What it is: an app that will help you turn a physical toy vehicle (e.g. LEGO car) into an interactive toy.

What you do with it:please note: although you can use this app as a standalone app (just play with the buttons etc), it works best in the 'physical' environment. Construct your vehicle (from cardboard, LEGO etc) in a way that you can place the device with its screen facing upwards (see http://www.makegotoys.com/ for some ideas). Play with one of the vehicles: a sports car (touch the 'start' button to start the engine, refuel the tank, move the device for engine noises), an ice-cream van (serve the ice-creams and collect money) and a boat (start/stop the engine, feed the ducks, fix the holes in the boat).

What we liked: excellent concept of using the iPhone/iPod as an enhancement for a physical toy. Nice simple design, easy operation, humor, the 'fun factor'.

What we didn't like: only 3 vehicles, limited number of interactive items.

Please note: using this app on the iPad will require 4 times more material to build your vehicle than the iPhone/iPod version ;)

What it is: a set of construction activities with 8 interactive trucks and machines in a virtual sandbox.

What we liked: the idea, overall excellent quality of the app, beautiful, detailed graphics, lots of interaction and 'little touches' (sounds, animations), simple tasks, simple scoring system.

What we didn't like: we were missing any sort of voice clues, the names of vehicles could be read aloud. Links to Facebook and Twitter on the main screen.

Please note that during our review this app was free but even if the producers decide to charge for it will still be worth purchasing!

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Creativity, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Thinking & problem solving, Understanding of the world

What it is and what you do with it: 'drive' the car by guiding it with a finger over a ready-made track. You can also design your own track using various objects: traffic signs, buildings, jumping ramps etc. as well as some surprises (walking robots, dogs etc.).

What we liked: the concept. Nice illustrations (the objects look like they were made from recycled cardboard). Humor and fun factor. Sounds and sound backgrounds. The option to design your own track. Ease of use. No distracting elements.

What we didn't like: we would like to see more ready-made tracks for more variety. Educational value could be higher.
