Appysmarts.com Best Apps for Young Brains

Best apps for kids: Virtual stickers.

There are many apps for children for creative interactive fun with stickers. Kids love creating virtual scenes with ready-to-use elements, such as animals, plants, different characters and buildings. Playing with stickers, sliding them in place and arranging the scene they practice their eye-hand coordination along with the decorating skills and imagination. Some of these apps include interactive features (sounds, simple animations or even names of the object read aloud). Usually you can modify given objects (resize, rotate, flip or move). Apps with stickers are very easy to use so they are suitable even for the youngest kids. Designing scenes with stickers is one of simple ways of introducing little kids to the world of creativity and encourage them to create their own piece of art.

Here are the best for kids for making virtual sticker scenes, picked by Appysmarts team and users:

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Creativity, Interaction, Language, Understanding of the world

What it is: an app for creating virtual sticker scenes.

What you do with it: choose the background, drag the stickers from the menu, flip or move them around to create your scene. There are over 50 stickers (giraffes, lions, hippos, zebras etc), 5 animated backgrounds and 5 animated foregrounds to choose from. Created scenes can be saved and shared.

What we liked: the concept, nice illustrations, good selection of stickers, lots of tiny fun details (many stickers are animated), good educational value (when you grab a sticker the name of the object will be read out: 'giant tortoise', 'hippopotamus calf' etc.), sounds and sound backgrounds, ease of use.

What we didn't like: no instructions (it took us some time to figure out how to remove a sticker from our scene). We would like to see an option to resize the stickers manually (they are resized automatically when you move them around). Prominent links to Twitter and Facebook (on the starting screen and in the 'share' menu).

What you do with it: place stickers on the scene, modify them (scale, rotate). Then save/share your work. Use your finger (and painting tools) to enhance the picture.

What we liked: very good concept, high quality illustrations, easy operation. Editing options for the stickers, little extra 'touches' like animations and sound effects. Choice of sound backgrounds.

What we didn't like: only 6 scenes to work with. No autosave function (when you exit the scene it will not be saved). Occasional use of device's system menus for navigation.

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Creativity, Interaction, Language, Understanding of the world

What it is: an app for creating virtual sticker scenes, with 12 scenes (e.g. beach, safari, shopping, train, etc) with about 10 animated stickers in each scene.

What you do with it: choose a scene then complete it by dragging the stickers into correct places. Tap an object to hear its name and see a short animation. Once the scene is completed, all the objects can be 'reviewed' with their sounds, names and spelling. The scenes also include some additional mini-activities (e.g. play a game of coconut shy at the funfair).

What we liked: the concept, beautiful illustrations, subtle animations, music and sound effects, number of scenes to play with, ease of use, visual clues.

What we didn't like: some sort of voice instructions and voice responses would make this app even better (especially for younger kids). Bottom line: one of our favorite sticker apps for toddlers and preschoolers!

Best for: Interactive play, Creativity, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Music & art

What it is: an app for creating simple scenes with animated stickers (3 backgrounds, 10 animated 'props', 6 'actors').

What you do with it: choose the background, one of the props and up to 2 'actors' (rag dolls). Play with the actors by moving them around the scene.

On devices with camera, the actor's face can be replaced with your own picture.

What we liked: the concept, wonderful illustrations and animations, ease of use, fun factor, 'moody' background music.

What we didn't like: too few elements to choose from (especially when you consider the price). Very limited editing options. No option to import a picture (for the actor's face) from the library on the device.

Bottom line: a beautiful app... although very pricey for what it offers.
