What it is: an interactive book from the Cat in The Hat's Learning Library about the Solar System.

What you do with it: two modes of 'reading' the book: listen to the narration and follow the text or read the story yourself (or have the story read to you by a parent). Touch the objects on pages and their name will be displayed and read out. Touch highlighted words for definitions and explanations.

What we liked: the story, very good educational value, excellent reading options (words are highlighted, you can touch a word to have it read out, you can touch and hold the words to repeat a paragraph), picture-word associations, professional narration, sounds and sound backgrounds.

What we didn't like: almost no extra interactions/functions (compared to the other books from this series).

Note about ads: the app has an option to display news and ads from the publisher but this option can be turned off in the settings menu.

What it is: an app for creating virtual sticker scenes.

What you do with it: choose the background, drag the stickers from the menu, flip or move them around to create your scene. There are over 50 stickers (planets, constellations, spaceships, stars), 5 animated backgrounds and 5 animated foregrounds to choose from. Created scenes can be saved and shared.

What we liked: the concept, nice simple illustrations, good selection of stickers, lots of tiny fun details (many stickers are animated), good educational value (when you grab a sticker the name of the object will be read out: 'blue rocket', 'Great Bear Constellation' etc.), sounds and sound backgrounds, ease of use.

What we didn't like: no instructions (it took us some time to figure out how to remove a sticker from our scene). We would like to see an option to resize the stickers manually (they are resized automatically when you move them around). Prominent links to Twitter and Facebook (on the starting screen and in the 'share' menu).

What it is: an interactive book (40 pages) introducing kids to the Solar System.

What you do with it: read the book (there is no narration), use the interactive features to compare planet sizes, , compare gravity or orbital speeds of the planets etc.

The book also contains videos illustrating some of the topics.

What we liked: the concept, good educational value (the information is very well presented), interesting interactive features illustrating the topics, easy navigation, no distracting elements.

What we didn't like: we wish there were more photos and videos (and the existing videos cannot be viewed full screen). Some sections/topics could contain more information (e.g. space exploration). No narration (for younger kids parental assistance is necessary).

Overall Score: 77/100

version reviewed: 1.0

Best for: Education, Understanding of the world

What it is: 4 activities introducing kids to the Solar System.

What you do with it: the activities include: Information Center (listening to the information about the Sun and the planets: sizes, temperatures, distances, orbits), Planet Sizes (visual comparison of planet sizes), Planet Orbits (watch an animation presenting planets orbiting the Sun), Planet Card Matching (match pictures and names of planets).

What we liked: the concept, ease of use.

What we didn't like: the 'Information Center' is very static (you just listen to the narration). The scientific facts could be presented in much more 'kid-friendly' way. The other 3 activities could offer much more educational value.

What it is: an interactive fantasy book (about 12 pages long) about a trip to the moon. 5 language versions: English, Italian, French, Spanish and Chinese.

What you do with it: read the book or listen to the narration. Tap the objects/characters or shake the device for interactions (sounds and simple animations).

What we liked: nice illustrations, the option to record your own narration, 5 language versions included (both text and narration).

What we didn't like:most of the interactive features may not be inspiring enough for the target age group. The reading options could be better (words are not highlighted, the text layout is not young reader friendly).

Video

What it is: an interactive movie (about 20 minutes long) about a pair of young 'scientists' trying to build and fly a space rocket. Contains three simple educational activities: tracing, color mixing and sorting + extra information about planets and stars.

What you do with it: at the end of each segment of the movie listen to the instructions and complete the task: trace the parts of the space rocket, mix colors to obtain 'rocket fuel, sort the rocket pieces (the difficulty level increases with each 'play'). After the rocket is complete, try to navigate it through space and learn 'facts' about the objects you pass along the way.

What we liked: the concept, simple storyline, the characters, professional 3D animation, sounds/sound backgrounds/voice acting, overall quality of the app. The child is 'immersed' in the movie ('turn taking', narration, the activities complement the storyline).

What we didn't like: the last activity (flying the rocket through space: the rocket is difficult to control, the 'journey' is a bit chaotic). The other activities range from very good and engaging (color mixing) to rather basic (the sorting activity). Some parts of the app couldn't be evaluated in this version (the Parents Section).

Overall Score: 52/100

version reviewed: 1.2

Best for: Magazines, Understanding of the world

What it is: a viewer app for the spaceplace.nasa.gov website.

What you do with it: the items (pictures, texts, videos) can be browsed in three modes: list, linear (chronological) and 'infinite looping grid'. Click on the icon to view the content (read an article, view photos or videos). The items can be shared (e-mail, Twitter, Facebook).

What we liked: excellent content, great educational value.

What we didn't like: poor browsing and discovery options (in the 'loop' mode the items are presented randomly, there are no categories, tags, search, age filtering etc). The bookmarking feature is very basic.
