Appysmarts.com Best Apps for Young Brains

Best apps for kids about seasons.

Children can learn through iPad or iPhone apps about different seasons of the year. Interactive play about spring, summer, autumn and winter can be very effective and fun! Preschoolers, kindergarteners or 1 - 2 graders can be teached via apps and games about seasonal changes in nature (plants and animals and their lifecycles) and the world around us. Kids learn while playing about temperature and conditions in every season, different activities related to each part of the year, how to dress up for the weather in each season (clothes suitable for particular weather conditions) etc. These apps can help them understand the world.

What it is: a set of activities introducing 6 science concepts: life cycle of plants, water cycle, seasons, living/non living, sink/float, senses.

What you do with it: follow the instructions to complete the activities, e.g. in the 'sink or float' activity the goal is to guide the main character out of a system of water filled tubes by moving him up and down with the help of items that make him either float or sink.

Each completed activity unveils a part of a mystery machine.

What we liked: the concept. Good variety of activities. Simple illustrations and animations. Sounds and sound backgrounds. Spoken instructions. The option to display instructions on the screen (useful for hearing impaired kids). Overall quality of the app.

What we didn't like: may get a bit repetitive after you go through the activities more than once. Some activities are more engaging than others (e.g. 'plants', 'sink or float' vs living/non living). The activities have to be unlocked one by one.

What it is: a simple 'dress me up' type app with educational twist.

What you do with it:choose the most appropriate clothing items based on the outside weather/season, take the character outside for some extra activities (e.g. grow flowers, guiding a paper boat through a maze etc)

What we liked: the concept, overall 'look and feel' of the app, easy operation, cute graphics, fun factor, the extra activities.

What we didn't like: limited number of clothes and accessories to choose from. No voice instructions (for some kids the visual clues may not be enough).

What it is: interactive play with sounds and animations. 4 scenes (4 seasons).

What you do with it: each scene (season) has different interactions, initiated by swiping, drawing or tapping (e.g. in the Spring scene you experiment with sounds and flower patterns by 'planting' crocuses, in the Summer scene you draw shapes, letters etc. which will be followed by a lawnmower etc). Created 'scenes' can be saved to the library on the device.

What we liked: the concept. Beautiful graphics. Great variety of interactions (including blowing at the windmill to make it spin). Subtle sounds and sound backgrounds. Ease of use (but please see the note below). No distracting elements. Overall quality of the app.

What we didn't like: some of the interactions/activities require much patience (e.g. cleaning up all leaves in the Summer scene) or precise movements (rolling snowballs in the Winter scene). We wish there were more interactions.

Best for: Brain teasers, Attention & concentration, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Thinking & problem solving

What it is:a set of 5 puzzles (one picture for one season of the year plus a bonus picture), there are versions of 6, 12 or 24 piece puzzles.

What you do with it: slide the pieces in place to complete the picture. After the picture has been completed, you can interact with some of the elements in the picture either by touching the screen or by tilting the device.

What we liked: nice illustrations and easy operation.

What we didn't like: the bonus 'interactive' elements can be disappointing (especially for older kids) - there is just one element for each picture and it is very simple (you can pop the bubbles in the spring scene, 'blow' the leaves in the autumn scene etc). The app is very 'silent' (there are no sounds apart from a little 'tick' when you pop the puzzle in place).

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Thinking & problem solving, Understanding of the world

What it is: 5 sets of simple play activities related to each season of the year.

What you do with it: complete the activities to obtain a star. For example: gardening in spring (make holes in the ground, plant seeds, water plants until they grow), chasing butterflies in summer (drag the boy/girl to catch a flying butterfly), raking leaves in autumn (drag the rake with the finger to put the leaves in a bag), building a snowman in winter (build and decorate the snowman by dragging the pieces on the screen).

What we liked: ease of use, easy navigation, simple graphics, number of activities.

What we didn't like: no audio instructions or visual clues (parental assistance recommended). The activities are very simple and get repetitive (every time you build the snowman it looks exactly the same, every time you grow the plants they are in the same order in the garden etc).
