Overall Score: 96/100

version reviewed: 1.0.1

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Music & art, Thinking & problem solving

What it is: two sets of pirate puzzles (9 puzzles in each set, each puzzle from 6 to 20 pieces each) and two pirate songs with animations and interactive elements.

What you do with it: complete each puzzle to view a short animation. Complete all puzzles in a set to unlock a song and play with interactive animated elements during the song.

What we liked: the concept, excellent graphics and animations, songs and sound effects, many interactive elements, high fun and entertainment factor, easy operation. Very informative help/instructions section.

What we didn't like: some characters can be a bit scary for smaller kids (that's why we recommend the app for ages 4+). We found some of the interactions of rather questionable 'fun value' (like the eyeball popping out of one pirate's head or catapulting the spider in one of the songs). Some of the interactive elements are difficult to find.

Bottom line: definitely one of the best apps for all pirate fans.

What it is:interactive tangram puzzles with 3 difficulty levels.

What you do with it:solve tangram puzzles by sliding shapes in place

What we liked:the concept, overall 'feel', easy operation, good graphics, option to create and share your puzzles, number of ready-made and user-created puzzles

What we didn't like:no instructions, occassional problems with sliding shapes into place. We would like to see even more difficulty options (e.g. re-create a shape using particular set of pieces without hints). Button 'more games' easily accessible to a child.

Petite Frite Games for Kids

Petite Frite Games for Kids

iPad

Overall Score: 95/100

version reviewed: 1.0

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Creativity, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Memory, Music & art, Understanding of the world

What it is: a set of 4 activities for younger kids.

What you do with it: Puzzles: 3 scenes with 10 shapes each, Memory Game: 2 variations (with pictures covered and uncovered) with 3 levels of difficulty (from 12 to 25 cards), Musical Theater (add singing and dancing animals to create the 'theater'), Sticker Scene (1 scene, about 60 stickers to choose from: buildings, animals, plants, toys).

What we liked: nice range of activities, lively illustrations, ease of use, no distracting elements, app suitable for toddlers, the 'easy' modes in the Memory Game (make it suitable even for younger kids)..

What we didn't like: no audio instructions. The editing options in the Sticker Activity could be better (e.g. you can't save the created scene). We would expect more content (puzzles, songs, sticker scenes) at this price.

Video

What it is: 4 sets of puzzles for various age groups: Forms (shape type puzzles, 1-5 pieces), Classic (classic jigsaw puzzles, 12, 20, 30 pieces depending on the difficulty level), Mathematics (require performing simple calculations to match the pieces, 12,20 30 pieces), Time attacks (classic jigsaw puzzles with time limit)

What you do with it: slide the puzzle pieces to complete the puzzles.

You can create your own jigsaw puzzles puzzles using the device's camera or pictures from the Photo Library.

What we liked: good variety of play modes. The 'Calculation mode' (good for fun math practice). The option to create your own puzzles. Ease of use.

What we didn't like: the puzzles must be unlocked one by one (we would like to see some sort of 'free choice' as an option). Prominent links to other apps by the publisher. The background music doesn't help concentration.

Learning Tots Animals DX

Learning Tots Animals DX

Price: free

iPad

Overall Score: 94/100

version reviewed: 1.2

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Thinking & problem solving, Understanding of the world

What it is: a set of 3 activities (flashcards, puzzles, coloring) with animals.

What you do with it: learn the names and sounds of 15 animals, solve simple jigsaw-type puzzles (4 animals, about 10 pieces each puzzle), color animal pictures (in-line coloring) and learn the names of the colors.

What we liked:the concept, cute illustrations, very simple operation and navigation, visual guides in the coloring and puzzle activities, no distracting elements.

What we didn't like:some animations (especially in the flashcards activity) would make this app even more fun. In the coloring activity smaller areas in the pictures require too much effort (kids with poor hand-eye coordination may get frustrated). In the puzzles activity we would like to see a 'very easy' mode with just 2-4 pieces (better suited for the target age group). Audio instructions are only partially implemented. No option to turn the background music off...

Paddington Bear’s Adventures

Paddington Bear’s Adventures

Price: 0.99$ (was 1.99$)

May contain `more apps` links
iPhone + iPad

Overall Score: 94/100

version reviewed: 1.0

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction
Video

What it is: 6 play activities with Paddington Bear. 3 levels of difficulty each activity (apart from the Dress up game).

What you do with it: 6 activities:

- spot the differences between 2 pictures

- make virtual marmalade using step by step instructions

- 'tidy up/pack the suitcase' (puzzles)

- 'help out' (object matching)

- Paddington goes home (jigsaw puzzles, 4-12 pieces each)

- dress up game (using items unlocked in previous activities as rewards)

What we liked: Paddington Bear. Original narration and artwork. Nice variety of activities (but please see the note below). Spoken instructions. The 'hints' function. Sound backgrounds and sounds.

What we didn't like: the educational value could be much higher. It is difficult to recommend this app to one age group: some of the activities are very simple (the dress up game) while other (spot the differences, the matching puzzles) require much more skill. Some of the activities (e.g. jigsaw puzzles) may pose extra challenge because of the monochrome color scheme used.

Bottom line: a 'must have' app for all Paddington Bear fans. The app got our 'Editor's Fav badge as Paddington is one of our reviewer's favorite character but if you are not sure - see our See Before You Buy video (below).

Video

What it is: 7 wildlife scenes (forest, savanna, jungle, desert, nighttime, snow, woodland), about 40 animal puzzles (2-16 pieces each, depending on the difficulty level). 8 language versions.

What you do with it: pick a scene, then an animal then slide the pieces in place. When the animal is complete its name will be read out.

What we liked: number of puzzles, ease of use, 5 difficulty levels (the easiest - with just 2 pieces - is suitable even for the youngest kids), the 'visual hint' feature, 8 language versions.
