Appysmarts.com Best Apps for Young Brains

Best apps for kids about fire trucks.

Kids (especially boys, but also girls) love to play with fire trucks in real life and we often hear that they want to be firemen in the future. If you have an iPad or iPhone, your kids can drive fire trucks with lots of interactive features and learn how the job of the fireman looks like. The Appysmarts team decided to create this list to help in finding the best apps about fire trucks for every fireman-to-be.

Overall Score: 91/100

Best for: Interactive books, Attention & concentration, Early literacy, Interaction, Language, Personal & social

What it is: an interactive storybook about 16 pages long (featuring the TV series character Wubbzy) plus extra activities: 2 educational minigames (alphabet and counting), 3 videos and a coloring activity. 'Read to me', 'read & play', 'just a book' (simple version with no interactions) reading modes.

What you do with it: read the story yourself or listen to the narration. Touch objects on pages for simple animations and sounds.

What we liked: the story. Many interactive elements complementing the storyline. Illustrations and animations. Funny characters. Sounds and sound backgrounds. The 'counting' and 'alphabet' activities. Ease of use. Good reading options (words are highlighted, touch a word to have it read out). Extra tips for parents. The 'Just a Book' mode. Overall quality of the app.

What we didn't like: inclusion of the 'Sparky the Fire Dog's Fire Safety Tips' page is an excellent idea - though we wish it was better suited for the target age group.

Overall Score: 66/100

version reviewed: 2.0.1

reviewed:

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Understanding of the world

What it is: a set of interactive scenes with the firemen/firestation theme.

What you do with it: to 'open' each scene play a short 'connect the dots' game (with words like 'dial', 'fire' 'water'), then play with the interactive elements within the scene (dial the emergency number, dress the firefighter, put out the fire in the building).

What we liked: it's a nice app for all the children who are into the 'firefighters' theme. Simple, non-distracting graphics. Easy operation, includes visual hints for help.

What we didn't like: we believe that this app is aimed at younger kids, thus the 'connect the dots' activity (where you reveal various words) would be too difficult for them (we recommend turning it off, which can fortunately be done in the settings). We didn't like the choice of the words either - they should be better related with the scenes. The activities and interactions are very simple, only 3 or so per scene - we would like to see more! Only linear navigation (you can't access a particular scene). Some sort of voice instructions would be handy (e.g. climb the ladder and rescue the cat in the 'ladder' scene).

Overall Score: 65/100

Best for: Interactive play, Attention & concentration, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Thinking & problem solving, Understanding of the world

What is it and what do you do with it: an interactive play app with 5 various vehicles (Mars rover, Moon rover, dump truck, rescue truck and a loader). Complete simple tasks (e.g. rescue victims, collect rock samples on Mars, deliver toys with a dump truck etc.) by 'driving' and 'operating' the trucks with your finger.

Touch various parts of vehicles for simple interactions (turn on/off engine, lights etc).

What we liked: the concept. Excellent graphics. Good variety of 'missions'. Lots of interactions. Sounds and sound backgrounds. Humor and fun factor. Overall quality of the app.

What we didn't like: no spoken instructions. Controlling the vehicles can be a bit frustrating at times (they move too slow or too fast). The education value could be higher.
