What it is: a set of animated puzzles (4 scenes, 2 pieces each puzzle) for learning color names, a 'colors' sing-along plus a simple mini-game.

What you do with it: match the puzzle pieces by the color (e.g. white chicken+white egg, brown bunny+brown bear, pink socks+pink shoes, red pail+red shovel).

What we liked: the concept. Simple illustrations and animations. Good narration. Ease of use. The extras (the Colors Song and the mini-game).

What we didn't like: we wish there was more content/color pairs. No spoken instructions.

What it is: an interactive book introducing kids to the scientific concepts of light and light phenomena. 16 main chapters (the Sun, Lightning, Fire, Thomas Edison, Lasers, Reflection, Refraction, Lasers, Telescopes, Color, The Human Eye, Glow in the Dark, Bioluminscence, Photosynthesis, Sunset, Auroras).

What you do with it: navigate through the topics, read the descriptions and perform simple on-screen experiments (e.g. play with mirrors to learn about reflection, mix colors etc).
Each chapter contains extra photos, videos, text facts and trivia related to the topic.

What we liked: the concept. Broad range of topics covered, good educational value (as the introduction to science). Many elements enhancing the reading experience (especially the interactive 'experiments' in the Reflection, Refraction and Color sections). Quality illustrations and animations. Humor and fun factor.

What we didn't like: no narration (we recommend parental assistance as many pages are not 'young reader friendly'). Some of the interactions (wriggling text etc) may not be too engaging for the target age group. The interface is gorgeous but... we found it a bit distracting.

What it is: an app for learning and recognizing colors.

What you do with it: There are two main options in this app: 'Read' (to learn the colors) and 'Play' (to practice them). The 'read' option features a minibook with 11 'pages' with colors, with 3 objects on each page. You touch the object and its name and color will be read out. The 'play' section has 3 minigames/activities: sorting objects by their color, mixing 2 colors in a 'color mixer' and pointing to the correct colors.

What we liked: very nice graphics, good quality audio, easy operation, overall quality of this app, good educational value.

What we didn't like: the minibook has no option to read all of the 'pages' automatically, without the need to touch an object on the page every time. In the 'play' section every time an activity is started, the configuration 'parent only' menu pops up (this should be configured somewhere else) and the audio instructions require an extra press of a button. The numerical scoring system in both minigames is not useful for smaller kids. We did not quite understand the purpose of the 'colors code' sheet in the mixing activity.

What it is: a 'tap to fill' coloring app with about 30 coloring sheets.

What you do with it: choose a coloring sheet, fill the areas with colors or patterns. The 'creations' can be saved for further editing or to the photo gallery on the device.

What we liked: ease of use (but please see the note below), the 'pinch to zoom' function (helps to fill out smaller areas), well working erase/undo functions, the option to save a sheet for further editing, no distracting elements.

What we didn't like: the user interface could be more polished. The selection of some of the coloring sheets could be better.

What you do with it: find matching pairs (by the color or by the shape).

What it is: an app teaching the names of 10 colors and color recognition.

What you do with it: there 3 activities: learning color names (choose a color and listen to the names of the objects on the screen), color recognition (listen to the instructions and point to the objects with the particular color) and color matching (match the objects with train cars by their color). There are 3 difficulty levels (4, 7 or 10 colors).

What we liked: nice graphics, easy to use even for younger kids. British, American and French narration included.

What we didn't like: just 10 colors. The object/color associations in the first activity can be a bit confusing for kids (not all umbrellas are blue). The time limit in the color matching and color recognition activities (may be frustrating for kids). The color matching activity has a limited educational value (why not include the names of the colors when the objects are touched?). The background music can be annoying (fortunately it can be turned off).

Overall Score: 54/100

version reviewed: 1.2.2

reviewed:

Best for: Education, Attention & concentration, Early literacy, Early math, Eye-hand coordination, Interaction, Language, Memory, Thinking & problem solving

What it is: a set of short activities for practicing various skills (early math, letters, colors etc).

What you do with it: the activities (featuring 2 cartoon characters) include: counting, pointing to the correct color or correct object, matching shapes, pointing to a shape or objects with does not belong to the group, sorting numbers, comparing numbers, memory game in 3 variations (animals, numbers, letters). The activities get more and more difficult as you progress (e.g. number of the cards in the memory game increases).
There are also 2 'reward' play scenes (Bath Fun i Toy scene) and a short animated movie.

What we liked: the concept, overall 'look and feel', good educational value, easy navigation and operation, nice illustrations and animations (with very cute and kid-friendly main characters), fun factor. We also liked the audio instructions (but please see the note below), the option for setting up and tracking multiple accounts and very detailed tracking/report/activity section (one the best we have seen so far).

What we didn't like: the activities get repetitive after some time. The 'fun' activities (Bath Fun and Toy scene) shouldn't be included as a part of the main 'curriculum' (we would put them in a separate section in the main menu). The audio instructions are sometimes difficult to understand (because of the high-pitched narrator's voice).

What it is: an app for exploring and playing with real life colors.

What you do with it: choose one of the 4 scenes, read the short introduction of the featured character and the instructions then using the device's camera and an on-screen color picker find suitable colors on real objects and 'transfer' them to the app and complete the pictures.

What we liked: the concept, ease of use, fun factor.

What we didn't like: only 4 scenes. No narration for the intros/instructions. The 'introduction stories' could be a bit more inspiring.

Bottom line: we wish there were more scenes to play with.

What it is: a virtual pegboard with 4 picture cards and one empty board for free play (in the free version).

What you do with it: slide the buttons into the correct places to complete the picture. In the free mode use the buttons to create your own picture on a 9x6 board (the pictures can then be saved to the library on the device).

What we liked: the concept, ease of use, simple graphics, locked 'options' section.

What we didn't like: just 4 picture cards in the free version. Additional picture boards (available as in-app purchases) are expensive (you get just 6 boards for $0.99). Direct links to in-app purchases can be turned off in the settings menu but the pictures are still visible to a child.
